Retail buying

A better counter assortment starts small.

How to plan a manageable wholesale trial assortment, compare carton costs and decide what to reorder.

Start with the space you have and the customers who use it. A convenience-store counter and a gift-store shelf need different products, even when both carry novelties.

Give every product a job

Choose a few different purchase reasons: a useful everyday accessory, a low-price gift and a playful sensory item. Avoid buying several similar products before you know which one your customers prefer.

Compare the whole carton

Multiply the unit cost by the confirmed units per carton. Add freight and any applicable charges, then divide by the sellable quantity to estimate landed unit cost. A low listed price is not enough to compare two offers.

Use sales to decide the next order

Record the quantity received, price, units sold and dates. Reorder products with evidence of sell-through; give slow items a defined trial period before changing the assortment.

Keep the first request clear

Send product SKUs, preferred variants, carton quantities and your delivery destination together. This helps the wholesale team return a useful quotation.
